Tell us a little bit about rachLmansfield.com and what you do.

I currently live in Manhattan with my husband who I married in September and I started my Instagram account about last March. It stemmed from an idea of me wanting to make a side income. I wanted to sell overnight oats in a jar because, as my readers know, I love overnight oats. I just started posting about them on my Instagram account and my husband kind of laughed at me and said, “You’re not selling overnight oats. Why don’t you just share your recipes?” I started to do that and then July 31st is my blog anniversary. I started to really see the potential of what I was sharing on my Instagram account. So, it’s a little bit of an unconventional path where I started Instagram and then transitioned into a blog.

How did you actually grow your Instagram account to 50,000 followers?

There’s no secret sauce. There’s no tips or one secret that everyone thinks that other Instagramers have. I always just say that you need quality content and you need engagement, you need your community and your tribe to support you and want to see what you’re sharing and as long as what you’re sharing is quality people will want to follow you.

What would be your best advice to starting out and really growing your Instagram?

I would say to have a common ground like what is the reason you want to have an Instagram account. Do you want to share your favorite fitness routine? Do you want to share your recipes, some travel, lifestyle and I think that when you first starting you want to be as targeted as possible. I just finally started branching out into a little bit more like the lifestyle type post it took me almost a year to even post a selfie of myself on my account. You want to be known for something before you start going crazy and dabbling in everything. Pick a targeted topic and stick with that for a little bit of time and see how that goes.

What has been your most proud moment in this crazy whirlwind year of yours?

I think the whole journey in general has been… I was walking on the street the other day and I just started hysterically crying which makes me sound like a ridiculous drama queen but I’m so grateful for this journey. When I first started I said to my parents, “I’m going to get 10,000 followers on Instagram,” and they’re like, “Okay Rachel, good luck to you.” And they didn’t get it. My parents are in their mid-50’s and they don’t understand what social media really means at this point and the fact that’s turned into my now full time job, it’s unreal. I think when Elite Daily recently recognized me as one of the top healthy food Instagramers then my mom text me, “I really think you’re on to something.” And I think that was really like when you have your baby, your pride and joy and someone recognizes your hard work that makes you so proud because you actually realized what you’re doing might be making a difference.

What has been your biggest flop or disappointment to date?

I would say not starting this earlier which I know is not technically a flop within the year but I guess just like not taking the initiative to make a blog and start an Instagram in an earlier date.

What do you think held you back from starting sooner?

Rejection. You create something that you put so much hard work and effort into and to share it with other people, I mean obviously there are people who will always not like it, there’s always going to be someone who is negative and doesn’t like what you do but when you just have that confidence to speak out, it’s just a rewarding feeling.

What would you say to someone who is in your shoes where you were a year ago and they want to start but they are afraid?

Just do it. There’s no reason not to. The worst that could happen is that it isn’t as successful as it could be and even if so then whatever you put yourself out there, you tried and the best that could happen it could turn into your job and you could be following your dreams in the most unexpected, unbelievable way.

How do you decide what brands to take on and work with?

My biggest thing is that I will only work with the brand if I personally and authentically love and use their product.

Why do you think that’s so important so you don’t branch out from what your audience knows?

Right now the food Instagram world is so saturated with so many different bloggers and everyone is talented. They’re all trying to share their product and recipes with their community. You need to be careful because if a brand reaches out to you, that’s amazing but do your research on them. They could be reaching out to 50 other bloggers at the same time and next thing you know you’re all posting the same thing. It just doesn’t make you look authentic and you want to make sure you’re true to your brand and you’re not just doing something that everyone else is doing.

Do you have 2 or 3 tips that you can share for people who are looking to work with brands and how to be true to your voice and customize it without kind of selling out to your audience?

The first one is to always get a contract when you’re working with the brand whether it’s a compensated post or not. You want to make sure that the expectations are clear. Another thing is just because a brand asks you to do something doesn’t mean you have to do it sometimes brands are learning too. Just do what works for you, don’t only listen to what the brand is asking for.

Where do you see yourself and your blog and your whole business in 5 years?

I hope that everything continues to grow at this speed and I’m grateful for what I’ve accomplished this far.

How do you stay balanced?

I don’t. It’s such a struggle for me. I just implemented a rule no phones in bed because it just helps me. I leave my phone on the couch and I get into bed and I’m done. That’s step one towards balance. Two is I go to Barre 3-5 times a week. I go there at 9:45 and if I don’t go there my whole day is just like out of whack.

Share one thing that you want your readers and followers to know about you that you think they don’t know.

I hate food photography. It’s my least favorite part of what I do.

Can you tell us the premise of your book, “Clear”?

This book came as a product of my two worlds colliding in, the creative background and the health and fitness background. I realized one day when I was sitting on a auditorium, listening to a speaker perhaps I also need this to be shared with the world that the way I think may be different from the way everybody else thinks. By that, I also realized that maybe I can help other people by aligning their lives through balancing decisions in health and wellness.One premise that I want people to breakthrough in there is regular thinking. It means that, we live our lives and we just accept the things the way they are. One thing that I really want people to do is to question reality and to question how they perceive themselves in their environment.

Why is your environment so important to how we work?

It is where you spend all your time. When I say environment, it covers your home, the place where you work and the location that you spend most of your time. What ends up happening is that, our environment is also living and breathing just as we do. It absorbs what we do with our lives. It means that if there is chaos or any uncertainty that is going on in your life, the environment that you are in will also be reflected. We have to stop fighting the idea of cleaning up. With our mess we are put into a position of not being empowered. If we have a cleaner and a more organized working place, it bring us so much excitement and power.

The Power of the Clutter Effect

Oftentimes, we just think of clutter as physical objects like a hoarder. Everybody can visualize a hoarder. People hoard things because they get too attached with it.  Clutter is something that we don’t really love, it is an unfinished project or a pile of paper or anything that is considered to be a distraction.

Tips on how to get “unstuck”:

The big thing here is to bring awareness to where you are and how you are with things. It is important for us, especially entrepreneurs to set up processes to make life easier, whether it is a filing process or any other means of how we do things. When I work with people, I ask them about what are they into right now. I also ask them what those things that keep them from doing better are. Most of them say that they can’t work better because they don’t have virtual assistants around them or they can’t organize their office because there are too many files or papers inside it. Basically, I question what are the things that keep them away from having clarity.

Tips on Starting to Remove Clutter in your life:

People look at clutter as overwhelmingly big things. I suggest that you start with small things. Start with the small steps. Let say for instance, you have been thinking about your own clutter, start with clearing first your inbox. When you start doing it, you actually gain confidence. After you do the small things, then there is already movement. You can keep on doing those things and in time, you’ll see big developments. The most important thing that I say is to not have an all or nothing attitude.

Tips on Being Productive Throughout Your Work day

Write down a list of things to do for the day or do a mind dump of the things that are happening in your life. Through that, you are able to be creative and be organized. The second thing is to exercise. Make time to take a leisure walk or stop in a middle of a project just to do 10 push-ups.  Starting your day writing a list and with exercise is immensely helpful.

One tip to building a brand and business:

The best tip to building a business is showing up consistently, which is the hardest thing to do. Have a consistent voice. It takes a long time to hone and develop yourself. People are used to the idea of an “overnight success.” There is never an “Overnight Success.” It takes time. You have to put in the work.

Focus on the Small Things with Katie Jesionowski, My Super Foods

Katie and her partner Sylvia created “My Super Foods” in 2012 to fill an un-met need for nutrient dense organic and non-GMO snack food for kids. They met in New York when they are both pregnant with twins and talked about their shared interest for foods. One goal that they have for the company is to end hunger for children in the entire US.

Tell us about you and your company, My Super Foods.

Sylvia and I met as twin’s moms in Manhattan. When the kids were about 1.5 years old, we were having a playdate, I was a stay-home mom at the time and we just have left our careers in Finance. We were both thinking of starting a business. As we were talking, we thought of dealing with the needs of our toddlers and talked about preparing healthier snacks. We had a great playdate and when we went home she immediately texted me and said, “Do you really want to set up a company with me?” I laughed at it and up until now I never really have said, “Yes.” Anyway, the next day, we met at a coffee shop and started talking about the big plans for our business. So, as first-timer entrepreneurs it took us 14 months to get started with our business.

Do you think it is easier or harder to have a business partner?

I think it is a thousand times easier to work with a partner. I always thought that it would really be tougher on me to work alone and that it is fulfilling to work with others and at the same time share success with each other. The best thing about having a partner is that you have someone who will lift you up during hard times.

What has made your the most proud in this whole journey?

In the shelves, I saw our products being displayed for sale. It made me so excited and I felt like everyone in the store knew what it was. The best thing also that happened during that time is knowing that we started the business for our kids. Our babies were the reason why we started the company, that’s why I am so proud to have them participating in this business.

As entrepreneurs, there are many high highs and many low lows. Can you tell me the story of one of those low lows?

I probably would have to say that there was a time when I got so excited about something and then I realized that I had to back track and not pursue it. As an example of that is when we reached out to schools. Our schools have this very big emphasis on the health and nutrition of the students. Yet we were still starting out at that time. It was our 3rd or 4th year in the business, we were still new and it was really hard for us with the requirements to comply. Many school officials got in the way in delivering these healthy, organic foods to the kids. We really had a lot of struggles in dealing with the schools’ terms and regulations and we had already spent so much time and effort. It just wasn’t the right time for that endeavor. You can’t do everything and you have to think about that.

Can you share about the start of your company and its concept?

We started researching information online, calling companies and other important people, and figuring out the things that we needed to do. I spent days and weeks in the library so that I can have a broader idea on how to trademark our logo and our brand. Yet the most helpful thing that we ever did was to talk to the people who done everything before us. I guarantee that it is best to seek help for someone who’s been there before. We took advice from people who have grown successfully in the business. Anyone can go online to search for the things that is best to do when starting a business. For me, talking to people who have actually been successful in the business is the most beneficial thing to do.

Is there something that you wish you knew when you started and that  you know now?

Our failures may be bad but there’s so much that we’ve learned from it. There are many things that wish we knew in the beginning but it all had a purpose and it is part of the journey.

Do you have a specific sales strategy?

I had a background in advertising and my partner had a sales background. Sylvia and I were so lucky to get started in our backyards. It was great to start in New York City. It was also convenient for us because a friend helped us get resources as fast as we could. The specific sales strategy that we had was to get in touch with the customers and the people involved in the business. Change is something that will happen whether you like it or not. When you’re planning to change something, you must let everyone know and that you must be open to these changes for it will really help in the betterment of the product.

I want the listeners to know that “Persistence is the key.” Don’t give up easily.

I’ve tried sending a lot of emails yet there will be no response for a month or two. Then, there will also be others who will try to contact you after a long time of not reaching you out and then say, “We’re ready!” Everything is about timing. It doesn’t hurt unless they tell you to stop contacting them. Just keep trying.

Do you have a company or a business owner that you look up to?

There are a lot of companies which have good track records. I like companies that have an awareness of what they are doing and know the consumer’s needs. Patagonia is a really good company because they are not only environment-friendly but make high-quality products. I like Costco as well because they promote from with-in. It’s important to take care of your employees the same as you take care of your customers.

Where do you see yourself and MySuperFoods 5 years from now?

I see an extended portfolio of our new products. All we need to have is the capital and the resources that we need to have in order to make the product. I also think that we should have a stronger fight against hunger in the United States. As of now, we already have 3 food banks as partners and we’re planning to add 2 more. We also would want to extend our social media access so that we can reach out to more customers. We love the idea of giving back even if we’re very small. Everything that we do can make a big difference. I also would want to widen our distribution and expansion in the whole country.

Do you believe in balance? If so, how do you stay balanced?

I definitely believe in the idea of balance. You can be a mom for your children and at the same time run your own business. It also means that you have to make some sacrifices in dealing with things. As entrepreneurs, we are expected to not sleep. I love the idea of hard work. We make our families our huge priority. I think that working for the things that you love is much better than doing the things that you are supposed to do.

What do you do to make sure that your day is successful?

Doing meditation is the best for me. I get up and walk on my treadmill or start the day doing yoga. Although I do it most of the time, I enjoy meditation the most. I do yoga twice a week, it really helps. Those are probably the two best things. I also enjoy going out with my girlfriends, having a date with my husband and going outside often.

What is your best piece of advice to someone who’s just starting out?

Just go for it. I know that it is a little bit cliché and it doesn’t mean that it will be easy to succeed and to have a home run guarantee if you just follow your dreams. It means that you won’t have that nagging feeling of “what if”. You will grow as time goes by. Sylvia had read a quote that says, “On the days that are really bad, where you get bad news or you have horrible things to figure out, just focus on the small things.” Some days, we just have to take small tasks so that we can keep moving forward. It may not be easily successful but the process brings out so much joy.

Can you share one thing about you that your customers do not know?

I would say that we are two moms. We are involved in all the aspects of the company and we are the ones who take the calls and answer back all the emails. Sylvia and I are not nutritionists, food scientists or anything that is related to that kind of work. We are just two moms who are concerned about our baby’s health and nutrition. We are just moms who are passionate about what we are doing.

The Missing Link in my Business: Connection

A month ago I went to Las Vegas for the 90 day year conference with Todd Herman. I got to connect with influencers like Melyssa Griffin, Rachel Luna, Nikki Elridge Brown, Melanie and Devin Duncan…and more. Can you tell me a little bit about you and what you do on MelyssaGriffin.com?

I help the entrepreneurs and bloggers grow their influence, income and their passion for what they do. Before, I was in a job that I wasn’t really happy to be in, that’s why I decided to start doing the things that I love to do. I wanted to be more creative and to really show my passion for things and my blogs. I help people in their creative designs and I also conduct e-courses and trainings.

Your website is really filled with gold. I mean, it’s surrounded with gold and it has amazing content about how to get started and how to actually build a business. 

Can you tell us how to get started even if we don’t have a lot of money to spend?

Well, first of all thank you! Now, first thing that I recommend you to do is to start an email list. You can do it for free and all you have to do is to sign-up. Next, is to fill your email with people and list of ideal customers who love what you do. Just create free content so it will encourage people to get into the list. Once you have already done that, start creating your first product. You don’t have to spend a lot of money for it. All you need to do is create something that is essential for them and provides an income for you. Connect with your community, be active on social media and be there for your people. If you do that on a daily basis, then you’ll have momentum and you can actually start your own business.

Most of the products that I thought of creating were just pulled out from the ideas of the customers. I mean, almost everything is just a product of their own preferences.

Can you tell us what a blog post needs to have? You preach about having a “purpose” to every blog post. What does that mean?

The first thing I think of when I’m creating great content is having that “takeaway” for the readers or the audience.  It is great to have something that they can learn a lesson from and also consider the length of it.  Also, if you can give a downloadable extra to it, then that would be great.

Do you have some tips to avoid people from unsubscribing to your list and also what should they do in order to keep people on the list?

I know that many people are afraid of that unsubscribe-thingy and my advice for that is to stop worrying. It only means that they are not your people and these are the ones who are not interested on the things that you do. Instead, worry about the ways to give value to the people that show interest in your work. You should target those people who open their emails just so they can be in contact with you. That way, you can create a good network and each person that believes in what you do.

I’ve read on your blog about the word “tripwire”. Can you explain what a tripwire is?

A tripwire goes into a sales funnel. Now a sales funnel is like an email sequence. Basically, a tripwire is a good way to start and sell your products into the sales funnel. For example, a tripwire is a very small product that has a great value. People sell this product for $6 or $7. It may be a video or a really extensive workbook.  They buy it and then you put them in a sales funnel.  Eventually, you say to them that you knew they were interested in your products and then offer them an e-course. They will  know what you are about and the products that you offer. you are able to have connection with your future customers and you can gain trust by having that tripwire. It would be easier to get in touch with the people you barely know if you put a lesser amount to a much bigger value of a product.

With all the social media outlets like Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others, how can we maximize our time without spinning our wheels?

My recommendation is to have a plan for everything. Schedule your tasks on a daily basis. Maybe on Mondays, you write your blog posts, on Tuesdays you schedule it all your social media activities and so on. Make a plan for all the things that you need to do for your business.  Make sure you pay attention to the best return of investment for the time that you’ve spent. Don’t do the things that are not really giving you a good return. It’s important for you to spend most of your time engaging in platforms that work and dealing with things that provide you income.

Is there a failure or a flop that you can share and how did you handle the disappointment?

In 2013, I started my business and in 2014, I started my brand and put up a print shop on Etsy. I used to be a creative designer. I loved to do hand lettering and I have always wanted to start making greeting cards.  I made personalized and hand-printed greeting cards and I also bought a professional printing machine. At that time, I really made a big investment by buying all kinds of papers, packaging stuff and other materials. It didn’t really work out. I realized that I didn’t really enjoy doing it although I love the designing part, that was only 10% of creating a print shop and it wasn’t my cup of tea.  I decided to close off that business and start focusing on my creative designs.  I was contacted by Urban Outfitters and they asked me if they can use my logo design in one of their products. It actually wasn’t a flop because even though my print shop didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, my design was still proof that it was a success.

What is the thing that you see on social media over and over again and think “Oh my goodness, please stop that”?

You know, the number one question that people ask me about is that how do I grow my audience or how do I increase my traffic? It is a big thing that people want to figure it out. I always ask if they use Pinterest and 90% of them don’t know what Pinterest is and how it works. I think that this is the best way to reach out to more people. I always say that Pinterest is the best platform and you’ve got to be strategic and use it successfully.

Can you give us 3 tips on how to maximize the use of Pinterest?

You should really cater your Pinterest to the people that are going to buy your products. Know the people who are interested in your work and products. Create your own Pinterest profile in such a way that you can attract that specific person who shows interest in your business. Write something to your prospect audiences and attach a link so they can sign up for your email list. Then delete the pin boards which are irrelevant to your subject or content.  Replace them with pin boards that attract your possible viewers. Pinterest is for creating pins that are relevant to what you are doing and in that way, you can maximize your audience’s interest by adding your own personalized content.

Also sign-up for board booster. It is a time-scheduling program on Pinterest. The thing that I love about it is that it allows loops on your pins so you can repost the pins that you’ve just posted and pin it back when you want it to. It allows you to grow your audience and your traffic. It is also a good way for you to increase your followers on Pinterest.

Do you have any tools that you can use in your business that help you stay focused and organized?

I use Asana. It is an online tool that helps me organize my life. Asana is like a calendar/to-do-list tool and it’s really cool because you can invite people to have the same calendar. However, I use Asana to just kind of plan my week and keep track of the things that I really need to do.

As an entrepreneur, how do you manage life, work, family and everything? I mean, how do you juggle these and everything in between?

I follow my intuition. I take a break, do something fun and I don’t force myself to do things that I don’t feel like doing. It has helped me to prioritize the things that I would like to do with my life.

What is one thing that the listeners must know about building a brand besides Pinterest?

I would say that you should start with what you have and do it today. I just want people to know that the best way to reach the level of success is to start doing the things that you know. Look up to people that you like and get inspiration from them. Just start with the things that you can afford. Learn from the mistakes in the beginning. Start now.

Can you share something about your Facebook community and how people can join that?

I have a Facebook community called “The Blog and Biz BFFs” –>  join here. I made the group for all entrepreneurs and bloggers who want to get advice, receive support and get feedback. I love the community because it has a lot of positivity. For me, it means a lot to have a group of people that connect and give support to one another.

Natalie is the president and co-founder of Healthy Human Life. Her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis prompted her to make clean living and healthy choices a priority. She co-founded Healthy Human Life to help people eliminate toxins in their life with the simple choice- choose stainless steel.

 

Tell us a little bit about you and your company, Healthy Human Life.

This company is actually my last venture. My partner and I are with it until the end of this one. We started Healthy Human Life because we wanted to be in the health space with a product that would help people’s health. As you know, I was diagnosed with a MS and one of the easiest and quickest thing I did was to start drinking lots of water. I was having a hard time using glasses, my grip wasn’t good anymore and I needed something unbreakable. We decided to choose stainless steel as a container for water. We wanted this to become a universal product. As we all know, we eat and we drink, so this is a product that people could use and they could give the product to their kids.  I really wanted to have something for the entire family as well.

Why would people choose healthy human in stainless steel vs. BPA free plastic?

BPA plastic has really been in the news lately and BPA free is supposedly not safe. We go to extra lengths to make sure that even the lids of our stainless steel stein is lined with the stainless steel and not the BPA free plastic. Even in the malls or the supermarket, they don’t use stainless steel in the lids of their containers. We are doing this so that we won’t touch any plastic that is in the lid, so making this product is convenient for everyone.

How did you actually get started?

My business partner and I combined our superpowers. I am into marketing and sales but before I got to be innovative in that field, a long time ago I was a potter. I was doing sculpting. I have this creative side. My business partner is actually the biggest tech guru that you will ever meet. He was setting up a very successful online stores when the internet was just starting. We decided to work together and planned to build an e-commerce company. From that stepping stone, we targeted Amazon because it is one of the biggest means of marketing. I know what it is like to order foods and what it is like to deal with distributors and I don’t want to do that again. I want to just sit at my desk or just be at the beach while I’m doing the business. I don’t want to manage 300 people. We worked on the means and ways in the business like deciding on what products are we going to have and how are we going to manage this venture. Many people have started asking how we do these things and asking us for advice. We have decided to work with the healthy options product since we’re both passionate about our health. From then on, I realized that this is where I am supposed to be. This product is made for me and I was born to do this thing.

What is your vision of your own company? How do you align your vision and your priorities?

My partner and I really wanted to have a work-life balance. Even though we are the same age, his boys are younger than mine—ages 10 and 12 while I have 3 teenagers, one is in College and the two are soon to be out in the next two years. My life is already getting to a point that it is not home-based anymore that is why I am switching to this new thing and what I’m doing really has to fulfill me. This business perfectly does that. Dick’s sports goods offered us a business partnership but then we thought that would be a new venture. We thought about it and said thank you anyway but no. We didn’t pursue it because we are so vigilant about about vision. We get wholesale inquiries every day and it’s tempting really, it’s nice to know that there are offers for us because it is a validation that our company is doing something right. I think there is value in it but it is very powerful also to say, “No!”

What is the proudest moment you have with Healthy Human?

That is a hard kind of question. I mean, almost every single day I throw my fist in the air and say, “YAY!” There’s that feeling of excitement because I think of the small things as bits of success. Everything, whether how big or small it is, is a victory for me. I love that we’re the first Paleo-friendly product to be approved by the Paleo Foundation that is outside of Food and Beauty Products. It is so cool for me because knowing we were first, and we will always be first and I can hang on that. I just think that is my best and proudest moment I have with Healthy Human. All of these things are just amazing. It proves that we fit in the healthy space, we’ve created a new quality product and people are responding to it very well.

What are the struggles that you have encountered in Healthy Human?

We underestimated the market. In our growing company, we also experienced running out of stock and that’s a huge thing because a company must not run out of stock. We had a lot of angst about that happening. It was really bad and painful. That’s why this year we have a much better stock flow for our customers. I have to say, that was our biggest issue in the company. We’re looking forward to recovering from it today.

What is your best piece of advice for someone who is just starting out?

My brother asked me this question a few months ago because he was starting his own business. I said to him that, at the end of the day as an entrepreneur you have to put everything all in. It means that you have to put it all in, if it means you have to sell your house or you do things that you thought you can’t do. In order to launch it, you must acquire new skills and if you are not willing to do that, maybe because of your family or whatever circumstance, then it is not for you. Any business that I have done and have involved myself in, I definitely put it all in. That would be my advice for anybody who is planning to start any business. You can’t have a plan B, meaning you must have a solid plan or else you are going to fail. I mean that you have to put yourself in the position of thinking the best for yourself. Never allow yourself to think about anything else.

Where do you see yourself in your company 5 years from now?

My goal is just to keep innovating. I mean, my mind is always looking forward to come up with the things. In 5 years, I hope that I’m going to have the most amazing product line. I don’t want to say I’m ever finished. It is always about what are we going to do and how, it is the thing that drives us every day. I can also see that in the coming years, our company will be more “branded” and become larger, it means to hire a super crew. I’m going to keep on doing things until I can’t do anything anymore. I vowed that this will be my last business.

How do you stay balanced?

Honestly, I stay balanced by taking care of myself. As a mom, I know that it is one of the hardest things to do but I actually take hold of that and realize that when you take care of yourself first, everything else falls in line. I also thought that what happened to me (MS) is the greatest kick of my life. If I didn’t decide on doing something for me, I might be laying in my bed for life. That’s why I took care of myself first so that I can do many amazing things with my family.

Do you have a morning routine to make sure your day successful?

I usually take an hour after I wake up to not be looking at computer screens, cellphone or TV. What I do first thing in the morning is that I sit and drink my coffee. I organize my thoughts and read the news. I don’t think deep thoughts, I just organize them. From then, I check my email and do about half an hour of some exercise and take my time before I go to work. When I say take my time, I have to prepare the essentials like having my smoothie. After those routines, my body is super ready to dive in to all the things in work.

What is the best promotional strategy or technique in Healthy Human?

My vision from the very beginning was to be an online company so we had to talk and reach out to people. It starts with the packaging and the entire messaging that people are reading online. When they open the gift and they use it, they feel sought out. Every detail was thought over and is absolute quality. If there’s any questions or follow up, we’re there actually to answer them. We don’t have automated emails, instead we are there personally talking with you. Every email that you get is hand-typed to you that answers your specific questions. I really wanted to create a company that had a human touch in an online world. Instagram, for example, is a large online platform wherein you can have marketing because it allows you to work hands on in a very adaptable way. From there, it blossomed and I loved to give products away.

Georgie and Christina are the founders of the healthy living and food blogging community, Bloggers Gonna Blog. What began as a small Facebook group has transformed into a growing tribe of hardworking, inspiring ladies with an increasingly popular hashtag on Instagram. The community has become a family that teaches, learns, grows and connects together.

Tell us a little bit about each of you and the BGB Community.

Georgie: I’m the blogger from In It For the Long Run. I started my blog as a way to entertain myself through a not so challenging internship and I quickly realized, “Oh, wait. This combines everything that I love.” The more time I spent on my blog the more I really enjoyed it. I really hit a turning point when I started actually conversing with the people who were reading the blog and who were creating blogs like mine and that’s when Christina came into life.

Christina: My blog is the Blissful Balance and I started it because I had struggled with my relationship with food and after overcoming that battle. I wanted to inspire people who might be struggling with the same issue and I always loved writing. I’d already been cooking a lot and sharing my photos on Instagram, so it kind of naturally become something that I fell into. For the longest time it was just kind of a hobby. I wasn’t really doing everything to my fullest potential and it wasn’t until I was connecting with other bloggers that I started to really learned and grow with them. That’s when I met Georgie online.

Tell us a little bit about the Bloggers Gonna Blog community.

It was around April, last year in 2015. I’d been commenting back and forth on a small group of blogs and I had been making, what I felt like, were good connections. I was like, “You know what, I’d love some way to make it a little bit more personal vs. like wait 3 days to comment back and forth. I used Facebook groups a lot in college to work on group projects so I thought, this could be a really fun way to just communicate and see if we are having similar issues. Maybe we can just talk about fun things that we’re doing and it could be just a better way to stay in touch. I didn’t really have huge high hopes for the group because I wasn’t sure if people would be interested in working with each other. From day one people have been so supportive and it’s just grown really organically and that’s when Christina kind of saw what was going on.

We pretty had much the same exact idea when I reached out to Georgie about the group. I told her my vision and what I’d been thinking and she pretty much agreed.  It was perfect.

How did you make the connection from going, “This is a Facebook group. This is great, we’re friends, we’re helping each other but now this is going to be a website and we’re actually going to help people grow their businesses.”

I think one of the big pieces of that was we would get various similar questions. I have 5 or 6 different emails like drafts for when people ask me very specific questions like, “How do you update your Instagram? How do you start a blog? What do you use? Is it WordPress.com or WordPress.org?” I had all these questions that I kept getting asked and Christina was the same way. She’s figured out we should make a resource so it makes our lives easier, their lives easier and this can become something much bigger than ourselves ideally with  our community. On our blog, we’d love for more people to contribute as we grow. It’s really not just us but a bunch of different vary perspectives. That’s how we made the transition from a supportive group to something that was a more of a resource.

Share an unexpected moment since you started the Bloggers gonna Blog community.

We did an Instagram challenge in January and we got such a wonderful response. It was a 17 day challenge and we kind of just did it to get more people active on Instagram and so many people came to us telling us that, “That really helped them…” Something that we hear a lot is that people struggle with consistency and frequency on Instagram and they said it helped so much. They got into the habit of posting on Instagram and it was a fun challenge. We were kind of blown away by the response that we received with that challenge.

That was one of my biggest highlights so far. We would think that a launch of a website would be a highlight. That was great but it’s honestly seeing someone in the community get featured on a big publication and it’s usually the other community members who point it out. Stuff like that where people are celebrating each other it’s just so exciting.

What is one thing that you wished you knew when you were starting out as a blogger?

Georgie: I think one of the biggest things I learned probably a year in is don’t be afraid to be yourself.

Christina: I wish I would have the perspective that my blog was for the reader because in the very beginning I was sort of using it as a diary or journal. Now I’ve learned that everything I post is something that I’m using to benefit the reader.

Our Needs Grow and Change with Samantha, Emmy’s Organics

Samantha Abrams is the co-founder of Emmy’s Organics. Emmy’s is a home grown family oriented company committed to spreading the good word about healthy snacking as well as social and environmental responsibilities. Emmy’s organic products are made in a wind-solar powered building and much attention is placed in reducing their carbon footprint. They like to summarize their commitment into 3 words: Ingredients, transparency and trust.

Tell us a little bit about you and Emmy’s Organics.

Emmy’s was founded by me and Ian. We started Emmy’s at the very end of 2008. We started this company in Ian’s mother’s home kitchen. We had been experimenting with vegan gluten-free raw macaroons that Ian developed many years prior and he was teaching me the recipe. We realized there isn’t really  anything like this available and this was the type of food that we really wanted to share

I grew up very active. I was a dancer and very into health, especially when I was in college. I experimented a lot with raw foods and different ways of keeping my body really healthy. Raw foods were really inspiring to me and when I originally met Ian he had a lot of experience in that world because he actually had worked in a number of raw vegan kitchens in New York and San Francisco. He end up teaching me so many skills in the kitchen and that’s how it all got started. Ian has grown up with a lot of food allergies; he doesn’t eat gluten or dairy. At that time he was just like, “Wow! There really isn’t anything like this”. It tasted so good and is so clean. It’s just really exciting for us so we really wanted to share those recipes.

Tell us what has been your most proud moment so far.

There are so many. I think that when we rebranded our company, we actually did a crowd funding campaign. This was back in 2010. We raised money to hire a real packaging designer and have our bags printed. It was a very proud moment to move in to this newer branding because it really spoke to our values a lot more. There was really something amazing about showing off the brand in that way. I think another one is when we got our loan with Whole Foods Market to expand our product line. That was really exciting just because it really shows that they believed in us as a company. Every time we get into new retailer whether it’s a large chain or an independent chain or a one-single store it’s really cool. It’s just really exciting when people are on board and excited about what you’re doing.

What is something you learned from crowd funding?

It was a little different then because it was very new actually. It was also very risky and we were like, “Do people really know what this is? There is sort of an educational component. Now I think it’s competitive and you need to put in a lot more work into getting your message out. I would say get really clear on what your budget is. Realistically you need a budget for whatever your project is and also be able to budget in the gifts that you’re giving people if that’s the route your taking. If someone gives $50 and you get an Emmy’s gift box, make sure you understand the cost associated with that. A video is really important. If you know someone who can help you edit and make a nice clear video that says this is who we are, this is what were asking for and this is where the money’s going. There’s a crazy statistic about campaigns with videos vs. without and how the ones with videos get funded better.

Can you share a specific flop or disappointment with us?

There was one time when we signed a contract without getting it reviewed by a lawyer and there was just something that slipped in there that put us in a stressful position. I really wished that we had spent the money on paying a lawyer because we really weren’t savvy with reading contracts at that time. Another flop is in the very beginning we made a mistake on our nutrition fact. The reason why there was a mistake was because the woman who was generating the nutrition facts for us completely misunderstood our product. She actually said there was a gram less of sugar per serving in our product. There were a few months when there was incorrect nutrition facts on there and finally I had them redone by someone else.The woman who did them the second time really understood it. It was a really emotional experience because I’m really all about transparency and trust and it was terrifying to me that we could lose the trust of a lot of customers.

How did you come up with your sales strategy?

We really just figured it out. I studied some business in college but I was not a business major and Ian had no experience as well. We’ve really just kind of figured it out as we’ve been going along. We’ve been lucky enough to have friends in the industry and mentors that we can ask questions.

Is there something you really wished you knew when you were starting out?

I’m happy for exactly the experience that we have had but there’s so many things that you do learn when you’re getting into larger retailers about how distributors work. You learn about all the numbers involved, giving discounts or refills when you get into a large retailer. We didn’t know about that in the very beginning and so when we started learning we really had to hone in on our budget and make sure we could afford that. It’s expensive.

What was a successful marketing technique for Emmy’s?

We do a lot of giveaways with other companies. We do have some really great friends in the industry and its fun to do giveaways with them. Instagram is our strongest social media medium. I think that actually probably one of the best ways that we’ve gotten ourselves out there is by using a lot of independent distributors in New York City. There’s a lot of benefits of working with independent distributors. It’s not always as expensive to work with them especially if you are just getting started. They go into intricate places like a lot of bodegas in Brooklyn.

Do you have a specific company or business owner that you looked up to?

Yes. I think Terces Engelhart, who is one of the founders of Cafe Gratitude which is a vegan restaurant chain out here on the west coast and we’re friends their family and I’ve always looked up to Terces and how she grown and changed her business model overtime. She’s written books, cookbooks, all very value driven I would say she would definitely be one of my role models. I just love how their brand has evolved overtime to move with the current trend. There’s something special about people who are able to pivot and morph their business to really align with who they are.

What would you say your biggest piece of advice is to someone who is just starting out?

I think what I said before, “Start before you’re ready.”

Where do you see Emmy’s 5 years from now?

I really see it as a national brand in 5 years. I would say we’re almost national now but there’s definitely a lot more we need to do to really get there. At that point that we would be established as a national brand and that’s what we are really going for.

Do you believe in balance? And if you do, how do you stay balanced?

I do believe in balance. Actually, a piece of advice we got early on was that there is no separation between work and your home life, for example, and that is true because I bring my work home a lot and I also bring my life to work and there’s something nice about just making it just one thing.

Can you share one thing in your day that you do to make sure it’s successful?

I really, really like sitting down to have coffee or tea. I try to have that one cup coffee or tea at home, not in a mug to go and that is something that I really, really love.

Share one thing that you want your customers and our listeners to know about you that you think they don’t know already.

In the very beginning when Ian and I started on Emmy’s we’re very stuck on this raw foods lifestyle. We both were eating that way and after a while, we started feeling like the rigidity of this diet is impacting our happiness in general. That is something I really learned personally and with my business. Our needs grow and change like I was just saying with balance. It’s also with whatever we’re eating and taking care of ourselves. I’m much less rigid as I used to be.  I feel we become a lot more flexible and I think that that’s something I’m really excited about promoting through Emmy’s.

Setting Up Systems for Social Media and Content Creation

Creating content, they say, is king. We basically all know this, but how do you keep coming up with content if you’re spending hours and hours in social media every day and week? It can be the biggest time suck. I hear you! Here are a few different things that I do to help repurpose content and manage social media accounts.

I am definitely not a pro but I do have 2 different social media accounts for Blissful Eats (@blissful_eats) and Nicole Culver.  I have two blogs and two websites and it’s a lot of work honestly. I’m all about working smarter, not harder…and this is an on going process. I’m not perfect and I have so much to learn but there are a few things I’ve implemented to help me streamline things so I am not spending hours and hours on social media. I try to say the MAX I spend on social media in a day is one hour, usually that goes into responding, communicating and building relationships with my audience.

How do I do this? I joined Meet Edgar about 6 weeks ago. It is a paid service and I am paying for it. Some people feel like that’s a lot of money which I totally understand but here’s the way I look at it: I was spending about 2 hours a week just scheduling out my Facebook because I have 2 Facebook pages. Now with meet edgar I am spending about 15 minutes at a time just loading things into meetedgar. You can set up different categories and if you run out of things to post it will just pull from your library.  It takes care of both social media channels, Blissful Eats and Nicole Culver on Facebook and on Twitter. It is very customizable as well.  It is a huge time saver. I know what I value an hour of my time, money wise, so $50 a month seems like a total steal.

The second thing is Theme Days. It has really, really helped me to make themes for every single day. I know I talked about it before but it’s really huge for me. I spend Mondays doing podcast, Tuesdays doing Blissful Eats, Wednesdays doing blog work and so on. Sometimes in the week it will change a little bit and I’ll swap things around. Being able to batch really makes me stay focused and gets rid of things that are distracting to me because everything else is away. It has saved me a lot of time. If you can sit down one day a week or one day every other week and just batch your blog posts it will save you a lot of time. As far as taking pictures, if you can take a bunch of pictures at one time it will save you a lot of time in the long run. When I’m getting ready to take a picture of a bowl of granola, I will take a bunch of different shots, I will swap out different granolas and I’ll use different props.

I make sure it will go a long way and I will get at least like 5-10 great pictures from one photo shoot because otherwise it takes a long time to set up. Batching work is going to save you a lot of time.

The next thing is, which I’m really big one is repurposing your content. Let’s take a podcast for example. My podcast is where all my content comes from. I have interviews and I the Fast Friday episodes, so now I have content in one place. From that one podcast what I’m going to do is I’m going to create a blog post from it. That means I’m sending it off to my VA to transcribe it. Now from that transcription it becomes a blog post from that transcription it’s going to become different Tweets. You can make little Tweetable quotes from your one blog post. Pull out three lines that are really great content and Tweet those out. From the blog post you can create 1-2 Facebook posts. You don’t have to just post on Facebook your links to your blog post you can actually lift great quotes from the transcription and post that directly on Facebook. A lot of times that will give you a better reach as opposed to just linking to your blog post. You can also make pinterest images on your blog post and then link directly back to your blog post.

You can create images, maybe you said a great one liner or maybe you can make a video from there. I do that a lot. I make 15 second videos for Instagram and I make 1 minute videos for Facebook. If you can use one piece of content and repurpose it, you can spread it across your different platforms. It is a huge time saver! Use Meet Edgar, Hootsuite or Co-schedule. and just take things from your one blog post it will help you repurpose, it will help you save a lot of time and it’ll just go a lot further.
