3 Ways You’re Wasting Money on Facebook Ads

Facebook ads is something I’m passionate about because it has really changed and helped my business. When we started with the Food Entrepreneur Summit, we basically had no idea what we were doing, but we spent hours researching, reading articles, listening to podcasts, speaking with experts, asking to speak to more experts and TESTING to learn how to get these ads to work for us. We tested everything and kept up with what worked and stopped what didn’t. Eventually, they actually WORKED for us.

When we go back to the ads and look at the stats, I’m actually not sure how we figured it out, but it really opened doors for us. From there we started reaching, testing, running split tests and invested a lot of time (and money) into our ads and have found a strategy that is working for us and our clients who’s ads we manage.

Between my Facebook group and just hanging out on Facebook a lot, I see a lot of bloggers using boosted posts and just overall, running ads without really having a strategy.

3 Reasons You’re Wasting Money on Facebook

  1. You don’t have a strategy in place. You just throw up anything, like a boosted post. Boosted posts are really only shown to people who have the behavior of “liking” or commenting on a post, NOT clicking through to your website. If you’re running ads without a clear strategy in place and you’re not getting sales, then you’re likely wasting money.
  2. Your images are not good. Facebook puts A LOT of emphasis on your images. If you have too much text (even though they have done away with the 20% rule) then likely you’re being charged more to be pushed out into the newsfeed. If you’re images just straight up aren’t good or relevant to the people you’re targeting, your relevancy score will be low, which = more money spent and less reach.
  3. You’re not targeting correctly. Maybe your audience is too small or too big. We aim for a target audience of 500,000 people. We also upload our email list and create a lookalike audience. You can target different pages/interests (example: Amy Porterfield, Chalene Johnson, etc)

Why Blogging Won’t Pay All Your Bills

After interviewing over 100 women, many of them bloggers, something clicked in my head. You can’t make a significant income just reply on your blog and sponsored posts.

I wanted to talk about something today that I think you don’t hear very often, especially after running the Food Entrepreneur Summit and having ears in the blogging community and also being a blogger.

I hear all the time that people want to quit their jobs and become full time bloggers. They feel like they are really, really so far off from doing that. I don’t know why it just clicked with me after talking to other entrepreneurs and interviewing people. It’s not realistic for us to have the perspective that you can make a full time really good income off just sponsored posts and blogging.

Yes, absolutely there are some people who can do it. I know that. But I think those are the minority. It’s great to be able to get a sponsored post and to get paid a lot of money by a brand, but is that sustainable? Are you able to do that every single month? Are you able to pay your bills and pay your mortgage off sponsored posts?

This is just make you think a bit. If you really, really want to be a full time blogger, can you think about doing something else? Can you find a way to work so you can fuel your passion? I think having a blog is a great way to share value, to share content, to share recipes, to share business tips, anything. But I think it’s just one piece of the puzzle.

If you want to have a job that you love and make a good amount of money and support your family, then you need to really think about is blogging and just running off sponsored posts a sustainable way to do that?

If it is for you, that is awesome. You are an outlier. If you’re not an outlier, I want you to think about can you just rely on your page views to bring in a full income? I really just don’t think that it’s possible for the majority of us.

The most successful women entrepreneurs that I have talked to, who are bloggers, the most successful one also have some other source of income that supports them. And  sometimes it majorly supports them, whether they are a health coach or they have a brick and mortar shop or they’re consultants. They do something that is supporting their income.  

There are so many new jobs all the time, people like me who are starting a podcast or starting another type of business. Can you share your skills and help out another entrepreneur and just sell your services?

Is there some type of hole that you can fill and you could start your own business based on something you’ve seen that there is a need on the market? I met someone at my business group who I’m going to be interviewing in the upcoming weeks, who basically started a stock photo site because she saw there weren’t any stock photos that were really kind of girly and chic. She started a whole business based on stock photos.

That’s what I’m talking about. People who are kind of seeking the holes in the market and sharing things that they are super super good at. That’s what I want for you.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What what am I really good at?  
  • What can I offer?
  • What do I see that’s missing from the market?  Then start a business.

I don’t want you to spend years and years in a job that you’re totally unhappy at, just waiting for your page views to reach a certain threshold.  Waiting, so brands will start to reach out to you. That is not the way to create a happy life that you are proud of. You need to be more aggressive and you need to be proactive and you need to take hold of your life. Waiting for page views to reach a certain point, so you can get to a certain point, that’s not how to do it.

So how are you going to do it? After talking to all these women and making all these connections I want to share those connections with you. I have put together a 90 Day Profit Challenge but it’s not just all about new content and more content. Yes, of course there will be new content every single month that I’m super proud of.

  1. Figure out who your ideal customer is. Nicole Holland provided an in depth workshop in  the Food Entrepreneur Summit about identifying your ideal customer. This will help flush out your business plan.
  2. Create a landing page to collect emails and get a general idea of who is interested in your product, program, or service.
  3. Launch to a small group of people.  Get feedback and tweak.

Are you a serial freebie collector? Stop the information overwhelm!

Staying focused is really hard. We are in major information overload, especially if you’re in the business space. There are freebies everywhere that are SUPER enticing. You could literally “freebie” hop and just download PDF after cheat sheet after webinar after course all for free. But really, what does that do for you? Can you think back to the last 3 freebies you signed up for? Did you open them? Did you read them? Did you actually implement what it was teaching you?

I have totally been there and am actually working to STOP doing this everyday. I could get sucked in to webinar after webinar.  Back in September I was just starting to work again and I was downloading just about everything. I probably still have Natalie Lussier free email course in my inbox if I went back far enough. At some point I took Amy Porterfield’s List Building Lab and her words just STUCK and resonated with me. They were something to the affect of, figure out what season of your business you are in and JUST focus on that. Amy’s voice is like butter to me. (anyone else?)

From that day forward I’ve been trying to focus on what season of my business it is, and ONLY sign up for things that directly relate to that. Example: For a few months I was in a list building season. Everything I did revolved around that. I tried (yes tried) not to download or sign up for anything the didn’t directly move me forward in list building. I took Amy Porterfield’s List Builders Lab and just really worked on lead magnets, etc. Now I’m in a different season (the summit!) so I’m all in on that. The only freebies I’ve sign up for (actually today!) was a Facebook cheat sheet because I wanted some tips on ads.

I want you to think about this. Are you a freebie junkie like me? Do you need to clear your inbox? Next time you go to hit “SIGN ME UP” I want you to think about what your goals are for this season and if aligns.

Freebie Collector: Say No!

*Another tip I got from Todd Herman in the 90 Day Year is that you can make a Pile Up Zone. So if you see something that’s SUPER intriguing to you and you know you want to get to it, put it in your Pile Up Zone. Then one day a week take the time to go through it. 

Back to it. Let’s take some action.

  1. Over the next few days (ESPECIALLY if you’re signed up for the summit!) take the time to clear out your inbox.  Let’s get down to 0. Delete everything you know you’re not going to use. Categorize what you WOULD like to use.
  2. Next time you’re temped to hit “sign me up” think about what season of your business you are in. Does it align? Does it help get you closer to your goal?
  3. If you choose to keep some courses/freebies. Sit down RIGHT now. Read them and make a plan to IMPLEMENT what it’s teaching you!

You don’t reach your goals by just thinking about them. Change comes from action.

The Missing Link in my Business: Connection

A month ago I went to Las Vegas for the 90 day year conference with Todd Herman. I got to connect with influencers like Melyssa Griffin, Rachel Luna, Nikki Elridge Brown, Melanie and Devin Duncan…and more. I also got to meet other entrepreneurs that are on a similar journey as me. Monetarily that trip cost us around $3,000 but the value was priceless. I came home with ideas to implement right away in my business, relationships I could build on and a new energy around my business. Making direct connections with other entrepreneurs was the thing that changed my business for the better. It was what moved me forward.

Are you an imposter?

Are you an imposter? Today I want to talk about something that I’ve been feeling: Imposter Syndrome.  I don’t know if you ever heard of it but if you are someone who sets really high expectations for yourself, you are a high achiever and you don’t settle for mediocrity then I am guessing that you’ve probably felt like an imposter before. Imposter syndrome is basically feeling like you’re an imposter or a fraud and everyone is going to find out. It’s like you have this secret that you’re not really as good as everyone thinks you are or your not really the expert that some people think. Let’s chat about how we can get over those feelings of being an imposter because if you are saying, “Oh yeah! I’ve totally felt like this before,” then I’m pretty sure you are a really high achiever.  I’ve heard about this from celebrities like Tina Fey, Kate Winslet and Don Cheadle just saying they woke up in the morning and they’re thinking, “How did I get here…” “I can’t go off to work because people are going to find out that I’m not who I say I am…”

I’ve been experiencing that for a little bit recently especially from this podcast because I’ve had so much amazing feedback and so many people, listeners and friends have been saying, “I love your podcast. I can’t believe you’re doing so much. You are really rocking it. I’m so proud of you. You’re so successful.” And I’m kind of like, “Me? What are you talking about?” I have been having a little bit waves of that and my husband is really, really good about helping me stop and kind of smell the roses and he always says”You have accomplished this…” My downloads have been increasing every podcast release and honestly I am proud. I have been trying to take time and celebrate it a little bit but I am the queen of just blowing through successes, not stopping and really appreciating them and feel like an imposter.  You’re going to find out that I’m a normal person who wakes up early, just works hard and has a goal and a vision. There’s nothing really special to what I’m doing or there’s nothing really I’m doing that you couldn’t be doing if you wanted to be…so Imposter Syndrome basically. If you feel like this then let’s talk about some ways we can get over it.

Ways to get over imposter syndrome

Take ownership of the successes you had.  I have a hard time with this one but I’m really working on it. Accept that you created your success and you deserve it. You obviously did something right to get where you are so take time, stop and appreciate the success.

Stop thinking so much about yourself. Have you ever just thought, “What are other people going to think of me if I put this out there, if I put this product out there, or this recipe out there or share this story. What’s everyone else going to think?” Stop thinking about what everyone else’s going to think about you.  Just stop making it so much about you. No one is really worrying that much about you. Just focus on giving, sharing out value and sharing your story. People will really appreciate that and resonate with it. If someone else has something to say then they shouldn’t be part of your tribe and they can just move on.

Appreciate the people who are supporting you.  I’m sure you have a little tribe or a community of people who really take the time to build you up. Go back and look at those blog comments or those reviews you’ve had or anything that you have that can build you up. For me that might be my Amazon reviews for Blissful Eats, that might be Tweets or emails that you guys have sent me about the podcast and links that you’ve posted about the podcast. Go back and look at those things that really build you up and make you feel really good. That will just kind of help you get grounded and focus on the fact, “Okay. I am where I am supposed to be and I am doing this. I deserve the success that I am having.”

Stop comparing. You are on your own journey; your chapter 40 is not going to be the same as someone else’s chapter 40 so stop comparing yourself…especially to someone else’s highlight reel. We tend to share our highlight reel and don’t share our failures. We mostly just share successes. You don’t know what the next person has been through so only compare yourself to yourself.

Share out your story. Be authentic, stay true to you and share what you’re comfortable with. Share the high’s and the low’s. This podcast is to share other entrepreneurs ups and downs so you can get a tiny little glimpse into what they’re doing. I hope you can find something tangible that you can kind of walk away with and also see that other people obviously have failures too. If you share out your highs and low’s people will kind of be drawn to you because you are just being honest and putting yourself out there.

Everyone Has Doubts

Everyone has doubts and everyone started somewhere. I personally love Chalene Johnson. She is someone who just always shares her truth and doesn’t ever try to sugar coat her story. I was listening to one of her podcasts this morning and she was just sharing about how she used to be a personal trainer with a broken down jeep. She used to go to people’s houses in her dream community and eventually now obviously she lives in that dream community. She totally doesn’t have to share about her start  when how she used to work out of her jeep. The point is everyone started somewhere and just because you aren’t having all the success that you want to have right now, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.

Be authentic, share what you know and share what you don’t know. Also regarding Imposter Syndrome don’t let that hold you back. Stop avoiding things just because you think that you’re not good enough. Just believe in yourself and tackle them. Maybe you haven’t started a new job or maybe you haven’t written the book you want to write or write a certain blog post or develop a physical product like granola or nut butters because you don’t think that you can do it or you don’t believe in yourself enough. Well you CAN do it. Make a plan and start and tackle all those things.

Imposter Syndrome can be very real and it can definitely hold us back. I hope  by doing these 5 things: accepting your own success, stop thinking so much about yourself, appreciate the people who support you, stop comparing and share your story (the high’s and the low’s) that you will get over this Imposter Syndrome. Your message is so important and you’re trying to just make the world a little bit of a better place and that’s so important and we need people like you.

Stop the Imposter Syndrome. You are doing an amazing job.

Without Failure There is No Success!

In business, there are ups and downs. It’s just the way it goes. We have failures and then, hopefully we have success. I know that it so easy to get on social media and caught up in the comparison trap. With Blissful Eats and the podcast I have been sharing a lot about my success.  In general, it’s really hard for me to stop and celebrate little things. I’m the type of person that just is like, “On to the next thing.” Something I’m trying to do is just stop and celebrate.

After I posted a recent success on Facebook, I realized that my Facebook is totally my highlight reel. I haven’t shared many of my struggles, but at the same time that’s what social media is, isn’t it? I’m such a positive person and I’m very optimistic. I’m totally a glass half full person. I like to say I’m a realistic-optimist, so it’s not in my nature to just really share any of the huge struggles we have with Blissful Eats or as an entrepreneur in general.  I try and keep it real in other ways especially as a working mom. I just wanted to stop and take a second and just be transparent. When you see all the success that someone is having, really what you’re not seeing is all the failures that they have had along the way.

No one is having success after success after success without having even more failures. I’ve gotten so much support from everyone and so many people saying congrats and I appreciate EVERY single comment (TRULY!) but I just wanted to take the time to say that without the failure there is no success. Chalene Johnson shared one of her recent struggles she had in her business and I basically recorded this right after I listened to that. It was already on my heart and I took it as a sign.

Just so you know that I’m a real person with failures as well as successes,  I will tell you that we did have a pretty big setback. We lost one of our biggest accounts with Blissful Eats because honestly we were taking a loss every time we sold to this big company. They wanted very low pricing to pass off low pricing to their customers and we just couldn’t do it anymore.  We tried to raise our prices so we would actually make a (SUPER SMALL) profit on the sale of each bag and they dropped us. I was super, super bummed about it for a few days because I felt like it was a great way to just get in more people’s hands. The reality is when you are in business you need to make money Especially in the food business where there is a ton of overhead, packaging, ingredient cost and so on and so forth. After having that realization that I need to move on and focus on accounts that do make us money (so we can survive and grow as a business…and stay around!)  I’m moving onward and upward. After that “failure” came a purchase order for Whole Foods Union Square which was absolutely amazing.

The point is, I just want you to know that social media is everyone’s highlight reel. I try to be transparent, I try and share my struggles. Even still on social media you are really going to see all the successes and wins, so get out of the comparison trap, don’t compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 26. Be positive and look at your own journey and look at how far you’ve come. Don’t compare yourself to the next person. I hope this helped you just stay positive where you are in your journey. If you are in the middle of a failure or you’re feeling high from a success then just ride it out and keep going, put one foot in front of the other and keep a positive light.

Are you Stressed? Ways to Reduce it!

Today, I want to talk about something that has definitely affected my life and I’m sure it has affected yours. It’s been something that has been on my heart for the past couple of months and I thought it would be really important to talk about today: STRESS. I don’t know if it’s just me but I am just realizing how much stress affects me as a person and even affects my health. The more I’m reading about stress, the more I see how important it is to kind of deal with it and work on ways to reduce it. I want you to think about it: Are you stressed?

For me, I didn’t even realize I was so stressed because I think I tend to down play things and I just think I have a great life, which I do, I’m so happy in my everyday things. Sometimes it can get overwhelming as an entrepreneur, a blogger, running this podcast, it made me think about ways to handle, manage and reduce my stress levels.

If you’ve been listening or following my blog you know, I have 2 girls; I have a 3-year-old and I have a 10-month-old. Being a mom is stressful in itself whether you are a stay-at-home mom or whether you are a working mom or whether you’re a dad, being a parent is stressful and I really didn’t even realize how stressed I was until it started coming out in different ways.

I want you to think about: Why are you stressed?

Does it go back to you taking on too many things? We’ve been talking about the Power of saying No and figuring out your priorities on some of the other Fast Friday episodes, so it’s all kind of in alignment. Are you saying no to enough things? And do you have your priorities figured out? When we take on too many things it leads to a lot of stress and stress has some serious ramifications. Stress can cause headaches, stomach aches to major illnesses. It ages you, it can cause insomnia, it can increase blood pressure and more. I encourage you to figure out what is causing you stress and how to reduce it.

One thing that causes you stress is multi-tasking. I used to take pride in the fact I am serial multi-tasker until a few months ago I didn’t realize how bad it was to actually multi-task. Multi-tasking alone causes stress because your brain is constantly scanning when you’re multi-tasking. If you have your phone out and you have a million tabs open on your computer and you have your iPad and you have so many things that you’re doing while you’re working it’s just TOO MUCH. Every time something pops up, your brain actually has to make a decision to engage or not engage even if you don’t pick up your phone your brain still has to say, “No, I’m not going to pick up my phone.” I want you to think of multi-tasking and how often you engage in it. You actually can’t do more than one thing at a time. Your brain toggles back and forth between the two activities you are doing.

When you’re making decisions you are actually using energy. If you have Facebook notifications up, you have that chime on your phone going off or a vibration, your brain is actually using energy overtime you hear that. What I found really interesting is that it requires the same amount of energy to make a big decision or a small decision. So just keep that in mind if you are multi-tasking and you’re doing a few things at one time. When I’m playing with my kids and have my phone out I’ve heard my 3-year-old say to me, “Put down your phone.” It’s always a big reminder that I shouldn’t be doing more than one thing at once and that’s just a small example. We’ve all been guilty of the notifications and having all the tabs open but I really encourage you to try to stop multi-tasking.

When you get to the end of the day and you’re super exhausted,  tired and cranky; think back over the day, have you done too much? Did you have to make too many decisions that require a lot of energy? Are you finding it hard to focus? What should you do?

Stop being distracted. Do less. Say, “No more.” Everything I say I feel goes back to the Power of No. What can you say no to? And what can you prioritize over other things? When you do too much your cortisol level increases and causes stress

What can you do? 

Get focused. The more focused you are, the less stress you will have.

THINK: When do you feel most focused?

For me, I know that this is a certain time of day. Think about it: when is your time of the day where you know your brain is functioning well, you feel rested and you feel like you can do things that require a lot of energy?  Those are the morning hours for me, from 7-11 am is my primetime. When it comes to after 4 my brain is not as focused so I can do things that don’t require as much effort like answer e-mails or just schedule some tweets on Twitter and things like that. I do the bulk of my major work in the morning because I know I can stay focused and I can work best.

What else can you do? 

Try out a power hour. I’m a huge fan of this. Most people can’t work for more than 45-50 minutes or maybe an hour at a time before they really start to get distracted. Test it out, get to know yourself. What hours of the day are best for you to work? How long can you work before getting super distracted? Then, what I want you to do is work for 45-50 minutes or max an hour and then take a 15 minute break. When I say break I don’t mean sit there and browse the internet. Get up, go for a walk, go outside, take a 20-minute power nap, have a snack, meditate, daydream, do one of those things because those things can restore your energy and allow you to do another power hour. Now, I know not all of us have the luxury of being able to dictate our day like this but if you are an entrepreneur or you’re a blogger or you have a side hustle then you probably do have some flexibility in your day so I encourage you to take advantage of this.

Besides the work, what can you do to reduce stress? 

I can’t express how important it is. I have those days where I literally feel like I can’t breathe. It’s like you forget how to breathe when you’re super stressed. Something I started concentrating on just breathing. I know it sounds so silly and so little but sometimes when I’m super stressed I find I take way more shallow breaths and I’m not actually breathing deep.

Ways to reduce stress and get focused!

  • Go outside. For me going outside, even if I don’t have time to go for a walk, sitting on my porch for 5 minutes and just feeling the sunshine makes a world of a difference of my mood.
  • Talk to a spouse or a friend.
  • Do something for yourself. Go to a coffee shop.
  • Practice breathing.
  • Listen to some good music, what is that song where that band that just puts you in instant good mood.
  • Write.
  • Practice gratitude. Start a gratitude journal or a bullet journal like Jessica from How Sweet It Is on the second episode talked about. You keep a bullet journal then you can just write down and writing is so cathartic, I highly recommend it.
  • Another thing that I love doing is turning on my pink salt lamp. It’s kind of hippy-ish but it really works on my mood and it’s just so pretty looking I think just looking at it makes me feel better but it has a lot of other benefits.

I want you to think about what causes you stress? How can you reduce it? How can you stop multi-tasking? And how can you really change your life to make sure you are living a less stressed life? I don’t honestly think it’s possible to live a stress-free life although I think it’s something to definitely work towards. Really, really figure out what you can do to stop multi-tasking, get focused and reduce your stress. I put together a little cheat sheet for you.   I give you some more ways to reduce stress and get focused.
