In this episode you’ll learn:
- Your passion CAN be your real job
- Importance of just getting started
- Challenges of starting out
Tell us a little bit about you, Michelle MacDonald, and what you do.
I started Sweet Note Bakery in 2012 from a family with food allergies and my sister and grandfather struggling with celiac disease. I always baked as a hobby and still do as an outlet, stress reliever, and just something fun getting in the kitchen and experimenting new recipes. I’ve been doing that since I was eight years old making little muffins in my parents’ kitchen and all through college I baked after my classes. I always thought it was just a hobby because how could something that is so fun actually be a career. I think a lot of times we are sort of trained that way and so we need a real job and like baking and having fun can’t be a real job and a real career. Slowly I started to realize that maybe it could be something and when my family told me about their struggle with celiac disease, I realized that this could be the start of a business.
What would be your biggest piece of advice to someone who is just starting out?
I hear a lot so it’s probably going to be redundant from other people I’m sure that you spoke to, but just get started.
How do you stay balanced?
The underline theme is passion for what you’re doing. Keeping the why close to you. It doesn’t feel like work. It feels like you’re balanced because you’re more balanced than you’ve ever been because you’re doing something every moment of the day that you love. I think when you love what you do it makes a difference but definitely there are boundaries. There are moments when you have to say turn it off and be there in a different capacity and not talking about bagels. I find it hard to shut it off because I love it so much.
